The allure of northeast India

|

When people think of India, the main things that spring to mind are the Taj Mahal at Agra, Goa’s beaches or the hustle and bustle of Delhi. While these are all wonderful, the northeast of India is definitely worth exploring for a more off-the-beaten track experience. Here are our top five reasons to visit India’s beautiful north-east.

1. The magnificent Himalayas

Any trip to the northeast of India should include time in the Himalayas. Drinking in the pure mountain air whilst gazing on vistas of snow capped peaks is a real tonic, particularly if you’ve just spent some time in one of India’s exhilarating cities.

2. It’s untouched

Go to Rajasthan or Kerala and you will see many other visitors. The north east receives far fewer – though Darjeeling can get a little busy. Head up into Sikkim or Assam and other visitors are few and far between.

3. The hill stations

Darjeeling, the refuge of the British Raj during the hot summer months, has real charm. Colonial era buildings cling to the side of sheer slopes, and the backdrop of towering Khangchendzonga is hard to beat. The steam trains of the Himalayan Mountain Railway still chug up and down, as they have for the last 125 years or so.

4. There’s always a nice cup of tea

Everywhere there is tea. Darjeeling and Assam are the eponymous tea towns but all across the region tea bushes cover the slopes. Take a visit to a tea factory to learn what goes into a cuppa.

5. You can enjoy some cross-border action

Bordered by Nepal and Bhutan, this region combines well with these Himalayan kingdoms. For the more adventurous Bangladesh is also close.
