Travel Writing: Bradt Guides Competition

Ever fancied giving travel writing a try? TravelLocal has teamed up with Bradt Guides and Stanford’s (the world’s most famous map shop) to bring you the ultimate competition for unpublished travel writers. The Bradt Travel Guides New Travel Writer of the Year competition allows budding writers to promote their work to a wider demographic (and there’s an incredible prize thrown in for good measure).

Bradt logoThe first prize, provided by TravelLocal, is a week-long safari holiday for two in Uganda. Travelling with the lovely Kombi Tours, it’s sure to be an unforgettable experience. With Bradt Guides due to launch their new Uganda guide, there has never been a better time to explore this incredible country! Furthermore, the top three writers will attend an awards ceremony in the presence of some of the country’s best-known travel writers, publishers and editors. The winner will also be commissioned to write an article about their time in Uganda for the Bradt website and get to attend their next travel writing seminar.

Get involved

To enter you must write a 600-800 word piece on the theme ‘A brief encounter’. The deadline is midnight on the 2nd January 2017 and full details can be found on Bradt’s website (and our social feed!)

Immerse yourself in nature

An unmissable experience, Queen Elizabeth National Park is one of Uganda’s prime game viewing spots. In the three days you will spend there, you will explore the Kasenyi Plains. Take to the skies

One of the most magical moments of the itinerary is a sunrise hot air balloon ride over the African plains. As the Rwenzori Mountains stretch out before you, you will cruise over the Kazinga Channel and watch herds of elephants buffalo head for the water holes. With landing followed by a bush breakfast, it’s sure to be a morning you never forget.

Close encounters

Bradt guidesA UNESCO world heritage site, the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is home to half the world’s remaining population of mountain gorillas. You will trek through dense forest until you find the troop and will spend an hour observing them. Many claim that spending time with these gentle giants is a life-changing experience. Watching them socialise, and observing the bonds between them, is a moving and affirming testament to the importance of local conservation efforts.

Uganda is a vibrant and diverse destination which is simply waiting to be explored. With this competition, its wildlife highlights are more accessible than ever.
