The best beaches of Mozambique

Boasting a generous 2000 plus kilometres of Indian Ocean coastline, it is no surprise that Mozambique offers an endless variety of beach resorts. Take your pick from empty sands lapped by water teeming with life, pretty, palm-shaded coves or lively local favourites where beach shacks serve up incredible seafood and finest African beats.

The heady cultural mix in Mozambique includes a distinct influence from the days of Portuguese colonial rule, lending a uniquely Latino vibe. Whether you’re searching for buzzing nightlife or spectacular dive sites, pro fishing or dhow sailing you will find it in Mozambique. This could well be Africa’s finest beach destination. Quirimbas

Whisper it, as this is one secret you’ll want to keep – Quirimbas is stunning, and as yet has suffered hardly any development. The adventure getting here is all part of the appeal, and once you arrive you may find it hard to leave. Get back to nature exploring the underwater world, settle in for some beach time, or spot turtles and whales among the islands and sandbanks. Quirimbas is a linear archipelago of 32 islands, 12 of which are inhabited, lying offshore in the far north of the country. Vamizi is known for its pure white beaches and Guludo is the perfect destination for divers and snorkellers. Whichever island you decide on, you can be confident that development is closely monitored and projects are completed sensitively with the pristine environment at the forefront of planning decisions.

Bazaruto archipelago

A haven for marine life with some of the world’s most untouched coral reefs, this group of four islands just of the coast of southern Mozambique has a lot going for it. It may be more ‘on the map’ than the Quirimbas archipelago, but it still has that feeling of unadulterated nature which makes it one of Africa’s best beach destinations. Host to over 2000 species of fish and a diverse population of bird life, as well as great land and water sports, there’s always something to keep you active if you manage to rouse yourself from your sun bed. Exciting accommodation options abound particularly on the bigger islands of Bazaruto and Benguerra, making this archipelago an accessible and enticing option for an African beach stay.

Pemba

The sheer extent of white sand is the big draw at Pemba, as well as the raw appeal of of an African beach town where authenticity is king. Share the beach with the locals, enjoy a meal in a beachside cafe, or venture into the town. Beaches stretch for miles along the coast near Pemba so if you are looking for a little less buzz head out of town.

Tofo

This is party central. The lovely long beach is reason enough to come, but the laid back traveller vibe and brilliant nightlife will convince you to stay.

Bilene

Not too far from the capital Maputo and correspondingly popular, Bilene is actually located on a lagoon just inland from the coast, fed by the sea and known for its calm, clean waters and white sand beaches. Great seafood is up for grabs at the beach bars and the choice of accommodation is impressive – whatever your budget.
