The White Bridge, Kutaisi
Kutaisi is the home of the Georgian parliament, and sits on both banks of the river Rioni. The city has roots going back to 500 BC, and today it’s an elegant city with broad boulevards, ancient churches and several attractive parks. The famous white bridge of Kutaisi joins the two sides of the city across the attractive Rioni river, and the wrought iron struts of the bridge are painted white to match the white rock riverbed. On top of the bridge there is a sculpture named ‘Picasso’s boy’ who is sitting in the railing of the bridge with a cheeky look on his face and his arms outstretched, holding two hats. It’s a popular spot for photos due to the fine views both ways along the river. Bagrati Cathedral is one of the biggest attractions in Kutaisi, a Unesco listed masterpiece of medieval Georgian architecture, located on a hill on the right bank of the Rioni. It’s an impressive sight and worth making a detour to visit, not least for the amazing views of the city.
