This is an African river with some unique features. The river begins in the highlands of Angola, over 1000 kilometres north east of the Okavango Delta. These highlands attract significant rainfall in the wet season, reaching a peak in January. Three times more water falls here than in Botswana, but it will be Botswana that benefits most from this Angolan rain. When the first rains fall in Angola the river swells, and the higher water levels take around two months to flow downstream, past Namibia, until they reach the Delta. The rainwater then begins to spread across the alluvial fan in Botswana, but can take another month to reach the furthest areas of the delta. So by the time the rainwater finishes its journey, it is dry season in Botswana. This makes the ideal
time to see the Okavango delta in full flood, when it attracts animals from all over the Kalahari who come to enjoy the freely available water supply and all attendant life. What makes this river special is that it is one of only a few globally without some kind of outflow into the sea. This river ends up spread across a vast area of desert, and 97% of the water is eventually lost to evaporation.
