Oman is a great place to self-drive. Our roads are safe, good quality and relatively empty; we'll provide GPS/directions, a mobile phone and back-up. 4WD is not necessary unless you'd like to have a go at 'dune bashing'. This trip takes you to some of the highlights of Oman, including Muscat, Nakhal fort, Nizwa and its market, the dunes of Wahiba Sands, the seaside town of Sur with its turtles as well as some of the prettiest Wadis the country has to offer.
Day 1 - Muscat
- Self-drive arrival transfer from Muscat airport to your hotel.
Day 2 - Muscat
- Muscat city tour - Sultan Qaboos Mosque, Natural History Museum, Old Town
Day 3 - Muscat, Barka, Rustaq
- Transfer from Muscat to Barka.
- Visit a camel farm
- Visit Nakhal Fort and Thowarah spring
- Visit Rustaq Fort
Day 4 - Jebel Shams
- Transfer from Barka to Jebel Shams.
- Explore Wadi Ghul and Jebel Shams
Day 5 - Nizwa
- Transfer from Jebel Shams to Nizwa.
- City tour of Nizwa, including Nizwa Fort and traditional souq
Day 6 - Jebel Akhdar, The Wahiba Sands
- Transfer from Jebel Shams to Jebel Akhdar via Birkat al Mauz.
- Visit the mountain terraces of Jebel Akhdar
- Transfer from Jebel Akhdar to the Wahiba Sands
- Experience the Wahiba Sands
Day 7 - Wadi Bani Khalid, Sur, Ras al Hadd
- Transfer from the Wahiba Sands to Wadi Bani Khalid.
- Visit Wadi Bani Khalid
- Transfer from Wadi Bani Khalid to Ras al Hadd.
- Visit the dhow shipyard near Sur
- See the Green Turtle nesting in Ras Al Hadd
Day 8 - Wadi Shab, Bimmah sinkhole, Muscat
- Transfer from Wadi Bani Khalid to Wadi Shab.
- Visit Wadi Shab
- Transfer from Wadi Shab to Muscat via Wadi Arbayeen.
- Swim in Bimmah Sinkhole
Day 9
- Self-drive departure transfer from Muscat to the airport.
October to May is the ideal period to visit Oman, for glorious sunshine, negligible rainfall and tolerable heat. Peak season runs from November to February. From June-August it is extremely hot in the north, with refreshing monsoons in the south, greening the desert and cooling the ferocious midsummer heat to a manageable level. Note that during Ramadan many businesses will operate reduced opening times and eating in public is not allowed.
