There are eight species of these distinctive birds in Borneo, and you would be unlucky to spend a few days here without spotting one. They are very distinctive because of their large, horn shaped bills, hence the name. Many species of hornbill also have a casque attached to the upper mandible of the bill, which vary in composition between the species. Some casques appear to serve the purpose as an amplifier, while others are used as a weighty weapon when in conflict with other birds. The downwards curving bills are so heavy in relation to the physiology of the bird that evolution has fused two neck vertebrae which assists with the support of the sizeable beak. Hornbills are omnivorous with a preference for insects, fruit and small furry creatures such as mice, and unusually, when incubating eggs, the females remain at all times in the nest, meaning that the males are responsible for feeding both the female and the young. They nest in tree hollows or existing cavities which monogamous pairs will often return to year after year.
