Lake Mburo National Park
Conveniently located near the main road that links Kampala with the crop of national parks in the west of Uganda, Lake Mburo National Park is compact and appealing. The protected area encompasses 5 lakes, some tracts of forest, and a rest camp which acts as a hub for park activities. You can enjoy nature hikes, game drives and forest walks in the park, and there are several viewpoints and platforms to enable good views of wildlife and landscapes. The banks of the lakes are particularly rich areas to spot wildlife, including more than 300 species of birds as well as 68 mammal species such as impala, zebra, waterbuck, warthog, buffalo, hyena and leopard. The animals that are easiest to spot are the crocodiles and hippos - they spend much of their time in and around the water and they are quite a spectacle. There are more than 300 hippos living in the lakes, and happily lions are now returning to the area after a long absence, too. Birders might be pleased to know that Shoebills and Red-faced barbets are just two of the rarer species to look for at Lake Mburo.
