Phnom Kulen
The mountainous landscape north of Siem
Reap is known as Phnom Kulen, and it is an enticing destination both for its natural beauty and historic significance. As well as the stunning waterfalls which are found in the area, there are also some further ancient temples and even some unique riverbed carvings. The peak known as Phnom Kulen holds great significance for local people, and is visited as a pilgrimage site by many Buddhist and Hindu worshippers. Part of its significance stems from the fact that in 804 CE it was the location that King Jayavarman II declared independence from Java and the Khmer empire was born. Nearby is Kbal Spean, a site on the river where the rocks of the riverbed have been carved with exquisite fertility themed images which are very holy to Hindus.
