Playa Esterillos
The Central Pacific shore is the nearest stretch of coastline to the capital, and as such it can be a busy place, especially at weekends, packed with visiting Josefinos, surfers here for the fine breaks, sun seeking retirees from the USA and local Ticos going about their business. However, if you yearn for a bit of solitude among all this activity, head for Playa Esterillos, a sweeping stretch of chocolate coloured sand that goes on for miles, linking the areas of Esterillos Oeste, Centro and Este. This is a beach to enjoy for its lack of crowds, its wild natural setting and its waves, which attract surfers to the area. It’s a low key place, with little more than a scattering of decent accommodation, a few shops and cafes, and miles and miles of unspoilt sand. It makes a good break from the hustle of San Jose, or for a restful change from the bright, brash lights of Jaco, just to the north. Jaco is a preferable target if you like fun, but a blowsy, tacky kind of fun involving everything from soothing restaurants to raucous clubs to dubious street life.
