Despite it being a diffifult time in Sri Lanka and there being a shortage of diesel and then petrol, we managed to travel around without too much difficulty. A few queues for petrol and a few diversions on the road, but otherwise we had few problems. The itinerary that I worked with the company to develop and the hotels we stayed at were all excellent, the hotels being very varied and the service excellent. Our driver/guide always had our wellbeing in mind, was happy to rearrange things if it fitted in better, and was a bird expert. I don't know how many type of birds we have already forgotten! We managed to see 6 leopards over 2 days, which were the highlight of the trip, but we also saw a myriad of other animals, not a lorris though! Overall, an excellent trip.
The interaction with the agent to arrange the holiday we wanted. I knew where we wanted to go, what we wanted to do and where we wanted to stay, this was all put together quickly with a few emails.
The guide/driver was very good and was concerned for our wellbeing and comfort. He was very knowledgeable, particularly about birds, and had good contacts for safari drives, meaning that we got to see a lot. However, it may have been nice to go to a few places by ourselves, being dropped off for a set time. For example, the Botanical gardens in Kandy or Galle Fort. At the latter it would have been nice to wander around, do some souvenir shopping, sit and have a coffee, without having someone with us all of the time. Just a thought.
Do it! It is a wonderful and friendly place. And there are monkeys everywhere!
Seeing the leopards in Walpittu and Yala, 6 leopards over 2 days. Also, all the other wildlife we saw. The hotels that were very varied but all had excellent service and were in wonderful settings.
