Roluos: Angkor Without The Crowds

|

The Temples of Angkor tend to hog the limelight, but there are hundreds of temples in Cambodia’s Siem Reap region. Some of these can be found in the so called ‘Roluos’ group, easily accessible from Siem Reap.

The Roluos group pre-date Angkor and mark the beginning of the highly developed and complex classical Angkor civilisation. Visiting these three temples of Bakong, Lolei and Preah Ko prior to entering Angkor can therefore give a pleasing sweep of the period, and a better understanding of where the Angkor civilisation came from. Happily, they’re also far less visited, and you’re likely to see a mere sprinkling of other visitors.

Located in the countryside surrounding Siem Reap, with quiet, unspoilt villages dotted between the different temples, a good way to explore them is by bike – the terrain is flat, and there are few vehicles. Alternatively, the Roluos Group combine well with Kompong Phluk floating village.
