"Happiness needs more than memories of the past to feed on; it also needs dreams of the future”
Bored by beaches? Can’t stand carnivals? Occupying nearly half the South American landmass, Brazil has plenty of room to avoid the clichés.
Brazil stretches from the equatorial Amazon in the north, through the cattle ranches of central Cerrado, along eight thousand kilometres of coastline fringing the east, and all the way down to the misty altitudes of evergreen Araucaria pine forests in the country’s south. From the vibrant buzz of its megacities to quiet ranch retreats, secluded beaches to alpine hiking, there’s so much more to Brazil than Copacabana, churrasco and Carnaval.
3 Things You Shouldn’t Miss In Brazil
Dunes and lagoons
From October to June, Lençóis Maranhenses, in the northeast, is a desert of undulating, pure white sands stretching one hundred kilometres along the coast. Yet from July to September, this national park becomes a landscape of alien beauty, a flooded desert of crystalline lagoons teeming with fish, tortoises, frogs and birds. Don’t forget your swimming kit.
Falling for the Falls
“Poor Niagara!” exclaimed Eleanor Roosevelt on witnessing the thunder and rainbows of Iguazu Falls for the first time. Taller than Niagara and twice as wide, Iguazu Falls has 275 cascades spread in a spectacular crescent over nearly two miles. Extensive walking trails as well as boat and helicopter trips are available.
Castaway chic in Jericoacoara
There are no proper roads leading to Jericoacoara. Part hippy hangout, part fishing village, enjoy this laid-back oasis of sandy streets and unspoiled ocean. Watch the sunset from the huge Pôr do Sol dune, dine on fresh seafood, sip a cachaça cocktail from one of the town’s pop-up kiosks, or simply settle in for some serious hammock time.
